TITLE: THE CARETAKER
FORMAT: British Quad (30 x 40 inches)
STARS: Alan Bates, Robert Shaw, Donald Pleasence. DIRECTOR: Clive Donner.
NOTES: The cast of Harold Pinter's stage play recreated their roles for this filmed version by Clive Donner. The film was made on a shoestring budget (reputedly as little as £8,000) which was largely contributed by Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Sellers and other champions of British theatre as no distributor expressed interest in funding the film . The Caretaker was unable to obtain a release in London until it first screened in New York and when it was eventually seen in the UK the release was very short and limited. This was, however, a very fine piece of British New Wave cinema and Donner employed a non-musical soundtrack, avant garde close-ups and two-shots to unsettling and menacing effect. The film was later retitled as 'The Guest' and this first release poster with the ORIGINAL title is a rarity. The extraordinary, almost scribbled artwork, was fairly revolutionary in film poster design and is reminiscent of the work of the artist Felix Topolski. Althogh somewhat worn and damaged this is an important poster in both British New Wave cinema and theatre history and the only copy we have seen.
